This online workshop, Adult Day Programs in Hawaiʻi: For Kūpuna and Caregiver Respite, offers a comprehensive look at how Adult Day Care and Adult Day Health services support aging adults and the caregivers who care for them. Presenters will provide an overview of program offerings across Hawaiʻi, including daytime respite, social engagement, therapeutic activities, exercise, nutritious meals, and connections to community resources. Attendees will learn the key differences between Adult Day Care and Adult Day Health, what levels of care each can provide, and how these programs can serve kūpuna with memory loss or dementia. The session also covers costs, eligibility, and the referral process, along with important caregiver resources available through the Elderly Affairs Division. This workshop features insights from leaders across Hawaiʻi’s aging services network, including Kathy Wyatt of Hale Hauʻoli Hawaiʻi, Stacy Honma of Maluhia Adult Day Health Center, and Joel Nakamura of the Elderly Affairs Division.
Managing cognitive and behavioral symptoms in aging is an essential aspect of high‑quality geriatric care. In this grand rounds session, Brett Y. Lu, M.D., PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Hawaiʻi and Psychiatrist at The Queen’s Medical Center, will provide an evidence‑based overview of factors contributing to cognitive and behavioral changes in older adults. Participants will gain greater familiarity with modifiable risk factors, learn to recognize behavioral symptoms that may warrant medical intervention, and explore strategies to manage these symptoms safely and effectively—particularly in individuals with dementia. This training is designed for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals caring for geriatric patients.
Following a dementia diagnosis, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) need coordinated, person-centered support. Driving and Dementia: Balancing Safety, Independence, and Dignity is an online workshop designed to help family and friend caregivers better understand the challenges that arise when a person living with dementia continues to drive. Hawaiʻi‑based experts will explain how cognitive, visual, and motor changes influence driving ability, highlight warning signs of unsafe driving, and offer practical strategies for approaching difficult conversations with compassion and respect. Participants will gain insight into why driving is closely tied to identity and autonomy, and how to navigate these transitions while preserving the dignity of their loved ones. The workshop also provides guidance on available resources, next steps, and ways caregivers can feel more confident and supported throughout the process.
