Relationship-Based Dementia Care: Gain Permission Regardless of Cognition (Part 2)

When individuals are living with dementia, especially when they are having challenges with verbal communication, it may sometimes seem difficult to tell if they are providing their permission for care. This online training will explore the differences between care, abuse, and neglect; and will help learners understand the necessity of obtaining permission in dementia care, even during the later states of the condition. The online training will provide techniques and methods used to improve relationship-based dementia care and ensure that permission is always obtained in care situations, improving quality of life for all involved.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

Identify the differences between care, abuse, and neglect in dementia care situations.
Describe the importance of obtaining permission before engaging in care tasks with another individual, even when verbal expression is no longer possible.
Discuss the value of knowing the person and their history in effective communication efforts with those living with dementia.
Demonstrate and describe verbal and physical techniques to improve care interactions with those living with dementia.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC). The WRPHTC is jointed accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continued Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Tracking Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Implementation Progress

This webinar will guide state and local health departments on using the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) Road Map Evaluation Tool to track HBI Road Map implementation progress. Participants will learn about the importance of the tool and improvements made since its launch in 2023. An overview of the HBI Road Map evaluation data sharing activity and process will also be presented, and the benefits for contributing to the nation-wide evaluation.

This one hour Care Home ECHO session covers topics essential for care home and foster home operators. Topics include the 4Ms of geriatrics: What Matters, Medication, Mentation (or Mind) and Mobility which are based on evidence-based practices that support healthy aging.

This Mind or Mentation series, will feature:

10/16/25 – Tony Vericella with Alzheimer’s Caregiving and The Caregivers will share about the Caregiver Kit.
11/20/25 – Gina Fujikami, MD, will share about the Alzheimer’s Association – Partners in Care and Support.
12/18/25 – Qi Zhi, DNP, MPH, FNP-BC will share about newer drug therapies for Alzheimer’s disease.

Interactive Dementia Care Skills Training – Growing Older with Lifelong Intellectual Disabilities: When Dementia is Suspected or Diagnosed

This Project ECHO series is a free, practical, case-based education program for health care and human service providers who want to enhance their knowledge, competence, and performance related to the care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities affected by dementia. Each ECHO session will include a short presentation by a topic expert, followed by a case study submitted in advance by an ECHO participant site, and then open discussion to learn from one another. The NTG and URI/VCU GWEPs will be holding our 11th series of ECHO programs on topics related to intellectual disability and dementia – the theme for the Fall 2025 Series is Post-Diagnostic Supports.
