Resources on Dementia for Children

Witnessing a loved one going through changes associated with dementia can be confusing, scary, and alienating for a child, especially when adults don’t effectively communicate what’s going on.

The Hawaii Dementia Initiative has compiled a list of children’s book titles with descriptions provided on Amazon.com so that adults can review possible materials that would be suitable for helping to start a conversation about dementia with a child. The books may be available only in hard copy or digital (e.g., Kindle), or they may be available in both formats.

Additional information such as recommended reading and grade level and number of pages is provided when available. Adults should do further research on their own to determine which book(s) would be most appropriate for the child. In many of these cases, an adult will need to read the book to the child and answer any questions the child may have or provide additional context.

The following list is not necessarily exhaustive but provides a general sense of the type of books that are currently available. They are listed here in alphabetical order. You can use your search engine on the Internet to find out more about them. They may be available for order through Amazon or directly from the publisher, or available for borrowing at libraries. (Check library catalogs or consult with a librarian.)
