The two-day conference will include presentations related to aging covering topics such as care coordination\, aging-in-place\, technology\, social isolation\, brain health\, and dementia-friendly community building. \nThe conference is intended for elder-care practitioners in the health and human service fields\, businesses\, government agencies\, non-profits and faith-based organizations serving older adults\, applied researchers\, students in gerontology\, advocates for seniors and seniors interested in continuing their education. The conference will provide a continental breakfast\, lunch and afternoon snack for both days. There is a discount for HPGS members\, as well as 70+ year-old attendees. DESCRIPTION:Project Dana’s Caring for the Caregiver (C4C) program offers services to family caregivers and soon to be caregivers. The goal of the program is to help alleviate the stress that comes with continuous caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers will have the opportunity to “talk story” about their experiences and current concerns with their peers. The Project also plans outings to various locations and activities for fun and relaxation. The program’s coordinator facilitates the group meetings. SUMMARY:Relationship-Based Dementia Care: Gain Permission Regardless of Cognition (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:When individuals are living with dementia\, especially when they are having challenges with verbal communication\, it may sometimes seem difficult to tell if they are providing their permission for care. This online training will explore the differences between care\, abuse\, and neglect; and will help learners understand the necessity of obtaining permission in dementia care\, even during the later states of the condition. The online training will provide techniques and methods used to improve relationship-based dementia care and ensure that permission is always obtained in care situations\, improving quality of life for all involved. \nObjectives: \nBy the end of the session\, learners will be able to: \n\nIdentify the differences between care\, abuse\, and neglect in dementia care situations.\nDescribe the importance of obtaining permission before engaging in care tasks with another individual\, even when verbal expression is no longer possible.\nDiscuss the value of knowing the person and their history in effective communication efforts with those living with dementia.\nDemonstrate and describe verbal and physical techniques to improve care interactions with those living with dementia.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Beth A.D. Nolan\, Ph.D.\, Chief Public Health Officer and Lead Speaker with Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care (PAC). \nIn support of improving patient care\, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC). The WRPHTC is jointed accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continued Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)\, to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
