SUMMARY:Relationship-Based Dementia Care: Gain Permission Regardless of Cognition (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:When individuals are living with dementia\, especially when they are having challenges with verbal communication\, it may sometimes seem difficult to tell if they are providing their permission for care. This online training will explore the differences between care\, abuse\, and neglect; and will help learners understand the necessity of obtaining permission in dementia care\, even during the later states of the condition. The online training will provide techniques and methods used to improve relationship-based dementia care and ensure that permission is always obtained in care situations\, improving quality of life for all involved. \nObjectives: \nBy the end of the session\, learners will be able to: \n\nIdentify the differences between care\, abuse\, and neglect in dementia care situations.\nDescribe the importance of obtaining permission before engaging in care tasks with another individual\, even when verbal expression is no longer possible.\nDiscuss the value of knowing the person and their history in effective communication efforts with those living with dementia.\nDemonstrate and describe verbal and physical techniques to improve care interactions with those living with dementia.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Beth A.D. Nolan\, Ph.D.\, Chief Public Health Officer and Lead Speaker with Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care (PAC). \nIn support of improving patient care\, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC). The WRPHTC is jointed accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continued Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)\, to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

DESCRIPTION:Catholic Charities Hawaii (CCH) is offering this expert presenter panel focusing on Dementia-Related Behaviors that can be challenging for caregivers and providers of persons living with dementia in the community. This is the third session of the series which is made possible by a grant given to Catholic Charities Hawaii from the Administration for Community Living/Administration on Aging for the Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative awarded to organizations across the country to increase resources and information to improve the well-being of persons living with dementia in the community and their caregivers. One of the grant objectives is to provide these expert panels via Zoom for statewide attendees in Hawaii\, to offer training and support\, connection to resources\, and a chance to ask questions in the Zoom sessions. \nThe speakers will cover: \n\nHow dementia affects communication\nAdopting a person-centered approach to strengthen and improve communication\nStrategies to enhance communication with a person living with dementia\nEffective communication with family\, friends\, and health care professionals\nUnderlying causes of challenging behaviors in dementia care\nHow unmet needs contribute to challenging situations\nUsing positive communication techniques to respond to challenges\nExamining the caregiver’s role and needs in challenging situations\n\nExpert Panel Presenters: \nIvy K. Castallanos\, MHS\, is the Director of Programs with the Alzheimer’s Association\, Hawaii Chapter. She holds a Master’s degree in Behavioral Science and Health Education from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has more than 20 years’ experience in the combined areas of health education\, health promotion and disease prevention\, health equity\, and corporate wellness. She has served in roles with organizations such as HMSA\, the American Heart Association\, and HealthAssist\, and has held research positions with the Johns Hopkins Center for Cancer Pain Research and the Welch Center for Prevention\, Epidemiology\, and Clinical Research in Baltimore\, Maryland. Ivy joined the Alzheimer’s Association in 2014 and finds deep fulfillment in empowering families affected by dementia. She is a mom\, caregiver\, writer\, and dance instructor. \nDorothy Colby is a Certified Positive Approach to Care™ (PAC) Trainer and national Mentor\, with more than 25 years of professional and personal experience caring for people with dementia and training caregivers. The PAC trainings created by Teepa Snow share dementia care techniques that provide essential information for unpaid and professional caregivers on how to have a positive and meaningful relationship with loved ones living with all forms of dementia. DESCRIPTION:The Cultivating Care: Memory Café is a monthly garden-based program for people living with memory loss and their care partners. Held at Ho‘ōla ʻĀina Pilipili Accessible Garden site\, each gathering offers a welcoming outdoor space to connect\, create\, and build community through meaningful\, accessible activities.  \nThe garden includes wide pathways\, shaded areas\, seating\, accessible restrooms\, lighting\, and nearby parking. We provide all tools\, gloves\, and garden materials\, and serve light refreshments at each session. Registration is required\, and a map with parking and site details will be shared upon sign-up.  \nParticipants will be asked to sign in at the event and complete a brief evaluation form to support and improve the program. DESCRIPTION:Free half-day training that will aid staff at Hawaii agencies and organizations as well as family caregivers to assess\, record and observe cognitive function over time in persons aging with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). \nIn-person event with remote Zoom uplink available. Parking instructions will be sent to registrants who plan to attend in person. Lunch and handouts will be provided. \nAfter the training\, attendees will be able to:\n• Describe clinical manifestations\, incidence/prevalence\, and risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) in persons with Intellectual Disability (ID) with emphasis on Down syndrome\n• Share an overview and rationale for use of the NTG-EDSD\, an administrative screen designed to detect dementia-related changes in persons aging with ID\n• Describe how Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of dementia (BPSD) manifest in persons with IDD\n• Develop an approach to managing BPSD that includes behavioral & environmental interventions as primary\, and psychotropic medications as secondary\, in partnership with healthcare professionals\n• Understand how to complete the NTG-EDSD tool with persons aging with ID and their caregivers or whoever knows them best\n• Know when the tool can be administered and kept in the person’s records – how and why it can be shared with the person’s physician\n• Describe the challenges encountered in accurately diagnosing dementia with individuals living with IDD\, and the rationale for using the NTG-EDSD tool to track cognitive changes over time to share with and help physicians with person-centered assessment and treatment options \nTrainer: Ritabelle Fernandes\, MD\, MPH is a Professor at the Dept. of Geriatric Medicine\, John A Burns School of Medicine\, University of Hawaii. DESCRIPTION:A new diagnosis of Alzheimer’s\, another dementia\, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can bring a lot of questions\, and can feel overwhelming. Please know you do not have to navigate the journey alone. The Alzheimer’s Association – Hawaii is hosting an in-person 3-part series for individuals living with Alzheimer’s\, other dementias\, or MCI in February 2026. You’ll have a chance to talk story with others\, learn what to expect\, how to build a care team\, and plan your next steps with more confidence and hope. \n\nParticipants will learn about the progression of the disease\, effective communication strategies\, and tools to navigate daily challenges while fostering a sense of connection and hope. SUMMARY:Cultivating Care: Memory Café - Communication
DESCRIPTION:The Cultivating Care: Memory Café is a monthly garden-based program for people living with memory loss and their care partners. Held at Ho‘ōla ʻĀina Pilipili Accessible Garden site\, each gathering offers a welcoming outdoor space to connect\, create\, and build community through meaningful\, accessible activities.  \nThe garden includes wide pathways\, shaded areas\, seating\, accessible restrooms\, lighting\, and nearby parking. We provide all tools\, gloves\, and garden materials\, and serve light refreshments at each session. Registration is required\, and a map with parking and site details will be shared upon sign-up.  \nParticipants will be asked to sign in at the event and complete a brief evaluation form to support and improve the program.
