SUMMARY:Understanding and Responding to Dementia Behaviors: Communication Tips & Strategies for Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Catholic Charities Hawaii (CCH) is offering this expert presenter panel focusing on Dementia-Related Behaviors that can be challenging for caregivers and providers of persons living with dementia in the community. This is the third session of the series which is made possible by a grant given to Catholic Charities Hawaii from the Administration for Community Living/Administration on Aging for the Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative awarded to organizations across the country to increase resources and information to improve the well-being of persons living with dementia in the community and their caregivers. One of the grant objectives is to provide these expert panels via Zoom for statewide attendees in Hawaii\, to offer training and support\, connection to resources\, and a chance to ask questions in the Zoom sessions. \nThe speakers will cover: \n\nHow dementia affects communication\nAdopting a person-centered approach to strengthen and improve communication\nStrategies to enhance communication with a person living with dementia\nEffective communication with family\, friends\, and health care professionals\nUnderlying causes of challenging behaviors in dementia care\nHow unmet needs contribute to challenging situations\nUsing positive communication techniques to respond to challenges\nExamining the caregiver’s role and needs in challenging situations\n\nExpert Panel Presenters: \nIvy K. Castallanos\, MHS\, is the Director of Programs with the Alzheimer’s Association\, Hawaii Chapter. She holds a Master’s degree in Behavioral Science and Health Education from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has more than 20 years’ experience in the combined areas of health education\, health promotion and disease prevention\, health equity\, and corporate wellness. She has served in roles with organizations such as HMSA\, the American Heart Association\, and HealthAssist\, and has held research positions with the Johns Hopkins Center for Cancer Pain Research and the Welch Center for Prevention\, Epidemiology\, and Clinical Research in Baltimore\, Maryland. Ivy joined the Alzheimer’s Association in 2014 and finds deep fulfillment in empowering families affected by dementia. She is a mom\, caregiver\, writer\, and dance instructor. \nDorothy Colby is a Certified Positive Approach to Care™ (PAC) Trainer and national Mentor\, with more than 25 years of professional and personal experience caring for people with dementia and training caregivers. The PAC trainings created by Teepa Snow share dementia care techniques that provide essential information for unpaid and professional caregivers on how to have a positive and meaningful relationship with loved ones living with all forms of dementia. Dorothy is Director of Community Engagement for Hale Kuike Memory Care Homes at Nuuanu\, Bayside & Pali locations. \nThese Zoom workshops are made possible by a grant to Catholic Charities Hawaii from the Administration for Community Living/Administration on Aging for the Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative. SUMMARY:Cultivating Care: Memory Café
DESCRIPTION:The Cultivating Care: Memory Café is a monthly garden-based program for people living with memory loss and their care partners. Held at Ho‘ōla ʻĀina Pilipili Accessible Garden site\, each gathering offers a welcoming outdoor space to connect\, create\, and build community through meaningful\, accessible activities.  \nThe garden includes wide pathways\, shaded areas\, seating\, accessible restrooms\, lighting\, and nearby parking. We provide all tools\, gloves\, and garden materials\, and serve light refreshments at each session. Registration is required\, and a map with parking and site details will be shared upon sign-up.  \nParticipants will be asked to sign in at the event and complete a brief evaluation form to support and improve the program. SUMMARY:Dining without Whining - Bubbles without Squeak: Strategies for Easier Mealtimes and Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Join nurse practitioner Robin Bon\, GNP\, MSN\, for this engaging session designed to ease some of the toughest daily challenges for caregivers. With warmth and practical expertise\, Robin will share strategies that make mealtimes less stressful and more enjoyable\, while also offering guidance for smoother\, more dignified bathing routines. Participants will leave with realistic\, compassionate approaches they can immediately apply in their caregiving journey. This lecture is part of our Listen & Learn series\, offering support and skills to enhance quality of life for both caregivers and their loved ones. \nThe “Listen and Learn Lihue Library Lecture Series on Alzheimer’s” for 2025 is a monthly educational series featuring a dementia related topic sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter\, AARP-Hawaii and the Lihue Public Library\, in conjunction with the Kauai Agency on Elderly Affairs. This series is partially funded by the OAA National Family Caregiver Support Program and will bring local professionals together to educate the community on dementia related issues to help in the diagnosis of\, and treatment and care for\, individuals with dementia. \nWe offer all of our caregiver programs at no cost and rely on grant funding to support and sustain our work. As a participant of our programs\, we kindly ask you to complete the brief information form below from the County of Kauai. Completing this form allows us to cover the costs of this program through our funder\, the Kauai Agency on Elderly Affairs.
